In 1870, the first collection of Solitaire games in the English language appeared, with the book Illustrated Games of Patience by Lady Adelaide Cadogan. Solitaire became increasingly popular throughout the 19th century, and moved west into England, where Prince Albert was a notable lover of the game. In reality, however, it is more likely that he played the common game of Whist, but it does make for a fun item of solitaire-related trivia. It is popularly rumoured that Napoleon spent most of his days playing Solitaire while he was in exile. For example, Tableau is French for “Table”, and Talon is French for “Heel”. From the French we get many of the terms still used in Solitaire today. Some variants of Solitaire are still used for cartomancy today.įrom the Rhineland, the Solitaire craze moved west into France. Some early evidence suggests that Solitaire began as a fortune telling game, and only later became a game of strategy. The game was first recorded in the 1780s in a German book about games, entitled Das Neue Königliche L'Hombre-Spiel. Solitaire is a delightful puzzle game that boasts a wonderful history. The cards remaining after building the tableau are placed face down and are called the stock. Only the top card in each pile is face up. The first pile has one card, the second pile has two cards, the third pile has three cards, and so on until there are seven piles. Truly, the only thing missing from this game was a better setup for new players. You can use them and a few other subtle touches to play an ideal game. You can customize the game, too, from playing Relaxed Rules to adjusting the number of redeals and adjusting tableau piles. However, for those familiar with the rules, there's a great selection of features. While it gives a brief description of how to play, we were left with only a vague understanding of the object and wished the program had provided a tutorial. It's easy to use, but Klondike Forever is geared more toward those who already know the rules of the game, unfortunately. The game uses the simple click-and-drag play method you may recognize from other card games. ![]() ![]() We imagined it would look and feel like a standard solitaire game, but its 3D layout and simple commands for customization left us quite impressed. We found Klondike Fever's interface surprisingly exciting. While its gamplay is excellent for experienced fans, it leaves something to be desired for newcomers. Klondike Forever gives fans of the popular card game a flexible version they can play on a computer. ![]()
